Statement About the Future of the Island Airport

Toronto Spoke About the Future of the Island Airport. Gil Listened.

Toronto – “My campaign has been about creating a shared vision of a Toronto for everyone. Since I announced my candidacy, I have been walking the city; listening, learning and sharing with Toronto residents everywhere.

Last week, I put out a proposal to turn the Island Airport into a new park that would connect the waterfront to our beautiful islands. This would happen when the lease agreement with Porter ends in 2033. But I have heard loud and clear that you want to continue the conversation about the best option for this important site.

It is important that Torontonians start the conversation about the future of this 215-acre property now. We all know what happens when politicians don’t plan for the future.

My concern is that if Porter continues to shift operations to Pearson and chooses not to renew its lease at the island, the land will increasingly be used by a small group of very wealthy people for private planes. We need to start making plans to ensure that in 10 years all Torontonians can continue to enjoy this piece of public land and that it doesn’t decline into an underutilized private airport or, worse, into disuse and disrepair.

I commit that as Mayor I will engage with you in an extensive consultation process that will put all options on the table for the future of the Island Airport site after the lease agreement ends in 2033, including its continued use as a commercial airport.”
